In the past two meetings between staff and plot there as been some discussion about the role and cost of airsoft in our game. No changes have yet been made and no changes will be made until community input and deliberation has taken place. It should also be noted that if any changes are made they will not effect class balance. The classes will be changed, but their role, power, and overall feel will be preserved.
The two contending "gun" reps are airsoft and nerf. While the airsoft system will still have nerf guns, this discussion is focused on the end-game weapons.

Support of a Nerf system
-Cost to players: these weapons are cheaper and getting a solid T3 weapon far less limited by out of game funds
-No eye protection: Nerf guns are going to be shooting at a much lower relative speed and as such eye protection is optional, allowing for more rp, around the clock combat, better costuming, and lowering insurance needs
-Allowed at more places: As we are looking into sites to play at, there is the subject of cost. It is a simple fact that a place willing to allow for Airsoft will cost more, while ones that will allow for nerf only are more plentiful and cheaper per head. these duel benefits will come back to the players as the lowest possible event costs.
-Equal footing: while there is a nerf mod community, these blasters are still using the same darts and as such are going to be roughly similar in performance. The effect of this is that a person is not able to buy more range ( and thus a greater combat ability) with out of game money. Airsoft allows for $400+ rifles that are able to out-shoot their $50-70 counterparts, to a great degree.
-no Minimum engagement range: In a nerf only system there is no min range and even the longest range weapons are not capped by a "no fire" zone. This means that gun users will be better able to answer melee threats quickly and safely.

Support of airsoft
-realism: right out of the box these look like real guns. They add to the feel of our world and give it a boost in atmosphere
-Range: this is one of the biggest reasons to keep the airsoft guns they are able to reach out and touch a target far longer than any other weapon and for that reason they allow for functional sniping, but the cost for such a weapon is high and it does require additional marshal support.
-Harder hitting: Airsoft is more painful that nerf and more able to be felt through clothing at greater ranges.

Final Comments
I have been a big supporter of the airsoft side of things from day one, but after our test game I feel that I have underestimated the role that nerf can fill while also being very fun and keeping the ranged combat going. In this debate we are looking at a wide number of factors and the freedom from safety great that nerf offers plus the wider range of places we can play i feel makes a good case for this vote. If anyone would like to post their thoughts feel free.

I agree fully on how you summed up to two systems and would be open either way. Maybe a test game day with the full group?

I like this idea and would be very open to setting up a mod day for those looking to test and feel out a all nerf game

i agree with you kitty on all aspects of both nerf and airsoft. All i am going to do is thank you for putting this up to a vote. I will keep playing no matter what the decision is.

I'm in the sames boat as the rest of the everyone else. An I would like to suggest why not use both system allowing for even more range of options. If you don't now what i mean here it is. The use of both systems will give players and the game masters the the best of both systems, allows for more scenery change to make the game feel that little bit more real. I"m good either way, just make sure to give every one a heads up so the have time to prep for the changes.

So far we have been using both weapon types, but airsoft guns have the superior fire power compared to them. Which is why they haven't been seen much in game.

Another thing about having airsoft is goggles on at all times veruses with nerf you don't have to wear goggles when u play witch helps us with glasses and can't play with out them. But I understand either way about having both in the game like what lance said it is a good change of secnery with both. But I does kinda suck to sleep in a paintball mask or really any type of googles.

I was pretty on the fence about the whole issue, but it came down to the fact that for me, I wouldn't be disappointed if we kept it the way it is, but I would be a little disappointed if we moved away from the airsoft. It's not a do or die kinda issue, but I feel like the airsoft combat plays a part in making this larp different from others.

We forgot to mention that without goggles, make up is easier and more noticeable.

Again with what Felix said, the airsoft gives this LARP a different feel than others. You feel like your really in the wastes when your holding a solid weapon that shoots 70-100+ feet other than a plastic and foam pop gun. I think switching wholly to Nerf would give it more of a comical feel to it (especially when telling others about it) instead of that 'edgy' feel. All the people told about the LARP were never interested in it UNTIL I said we used airsoft, then they got all excited.

......though I WOULD like to not wear goggles...damn things always fog....

Another idea, what about airsoft during the day and Nerf after dark?

That could be interesting. It would also make things more stealthy during night since nerf guns generally aren't as loud.

If we were to do that, I feel as though there might be too many rules that would have to be changed and then remembered at different times of the day. Also, it gives an additional edge to the people that use guns. The distance makes up for the noise, while close combat uses stealth.

But what if all the rules stayed the same? (assuming we go with the nerf at night idea) I'm thinking of just replacing ALL airsoft weapons with Nerf, but ONLY at night. And yes the discharge of Nerf is quite, but have u heard the pump action? Its like a frikken gun blast itself! If anything it would give casters an edge because a Nerf fires about as far as you can throw a packet. Of course there could always be 'special scenarios' that allow airsoft, like an all-out full-auto night raid that was planned the night before by the party.

Well one of the things that came to mind was point blank. You would have to buy it with airsoft, but with nerf it would be a wasted skill. Just an example.

If we went nerf, we would likely remove and refund the skill.

But what would we do if we kept airsoft during the day and nerf at night? You would only have a skill you can use half the time.

We would likely keep the rules as is, if we did a hybrid larp. Well same after we finish the new rule book.

What if Point Blank shot gave a small damage bonus when fired with a Nerf weapon? Nerf IS pretty much point blank in comparison. Or maybe goes through armor?

Well what i think we should do is both but you gotta remember that most places if you stay at biglake then we can do airsoft more but with Nerf it gives us more places to play. with airsoft we are stuck at and airsoft field.
